Byron Horton, p/k/a Skypp (pronounced Skip), was born and raised on the east side of Indianapolis, Indiana. The lessons of life combined with its struggles has most certainly had an impact on his flow & content as an emcee. Those same life lessons also rationalize Skypp‘s gritty but soulful style.
An avid fan of r&b music, it is somewhat odd that he ended up being a rapper, but I guess one can say it was a sign of the times as hip-hop music and its culture was the defining element of his generation in urban areas. Skypp was raised on artists such as: Prince, The O’Jays, Aretha Franklin, Salt-n-Pepa, Earth Wind & Fire and Too Short to name a few. So it’s no surprise when people mention his “old soul”.
Skypp has been composing lyrics since his middle school days. In an interview with StopBeefinRadio.com, he recalled a moment in his early stages where two female classmates took his notebook and awkwardly performed his lyrics in front of the entire class, making him the laughing stock of his school. Although Skypp was humiliated, he stated that this event was the deciding factor in wanting to be an artist. He called it, “inspiring”.
Skypp would later develop, SKYPP SATURDAYS, a weekly freestyle series where Skypp would flow over industry instrumentals and upload them to his historic SoundCloud page. Due to copyright issues the series has many hiatuses and in 2018, became history. SKYPP SATURDAYS was arguably Skypp‘s claim to fame. He reached 118 editions, an unofficial hip-hop record.
Already the young emcee has released 6 albums and 2 mixtapes. Skypp has appeared on shows with: Babyface, DMX, Charlie Wilson, Mystikal, Floetry, Yo Gotti, Toni Braxton, DJ Quik and Anthony Hamilton to name a few. He has been featured on the cover of two magazines and interviewed/covered by countless media outlets. Skypp is ready to take the rap game to a whole new level and we are all lucky that he lets us in for the experience.
